Installer checklist

How to check an F-Gas installer

Installed split systems commonly involve refrigerant work that must be performed by appropriately qualified people.

This is general information, not legal advice. Requirements depend on the equipment and work being performed.

Ask who will carry out the refrigerant work

Do not rely only on the company name or a general statement that its team is qualified. Ask which individual will commission the system and what current qualification they hold.

Ask for the applicable certificate details

GOV.UK states that people installing, servicing, maintaining, leak-checking, recovering gas from or decommissioning relevant systems require the appropriate qualification. Category 1 and Category 2 certificates permit different activities.

Check the business as well as the individual

Depending on the work and organisation, company certification may also apply. Ask the installer to explain what certification covers the business and the proposed job.

Put the scope in writing

  • Who supplies the equipment?
  • Who performs electrical work?
  • Who commissions the system?
  • What warranties are included?
  • Will you receive commissioning and handover records?

Read the current GOV.UK qualification guidance and confirm details directly before work begins.
